Hapkido Basic Rules

Four Events: Divisions will be set up based on those participating that day to insure a fair opportunity to each competitor based on your age and rank noted when registering

Self Defense --The self defense demonstration consists of pairs performing a total of 8 self defense techniques of their choosing. The competitors may have all 8 attack or defense techniques performed by one of the competitors, or they may alternate who attacks and who defends. The purpose of this demonstration is to evaluate the competitors’ ability to select an appropriate defensive technique for the attack attempted, and to effectively execute the defensive technique so that the attacker is rendered harmless, as well as the safe falling technique of the attacker. The defender should not use flashy or ostentatious techniques that add nothing to the effectiveness of the defense. Rather, the defender should seek to end the attack using techniques that are practical, efficient and feasible for use in a real self defense situation. Defense against weapons is also included in this competition without extra credit for the use of weapons. A time limit of 3 minutes applies to all demonstrations, at which time the competitors will be stopped and assessed a 1 point deduction for each technique not completed (8 are required). Each of the techniques are to be unique, not repeated.

High Fall – Competitors will attempt to clear a horizontal bar, starting low and progressing in height, landing in a soft clean break fall. With each successful jump the competitor continues to the next round where the bar will be raised 4 inches. If a competitor dislodges the bar or lands in an unsafe manner, they will permitted to re-attempt the jump. If the competitor dislodges the bar or lands in an unsafe manner on the second attempt they are out. A competitor may make contact with the bar without dislodging it for a successful round. Competition continues until the there is only one competitor left

Long Fall – Competitors will be attempting to clear boxes for distance. With each successful jump the length of the boxes will increase 1 foot until the competitor cannot safely complete the jump without making contact with the boxes. If a competitor makes contact with the boxes or lands in an unsafe manner, they will permitted to re-attempt the jump. If the competitor makes contact with the boxes or lands in an unsafe manner on the second attempt they are out. Competition continues until the there is only one competitor left

Hapkido Sparring – Hapkido sparring is based on Tae Kwon Do sparring with the addition of Hapkido throwing and locking techniques and takes placed on a matted area. The rules and the awarding of points is the same for sport Tae Kwon Do, with following additions:

2 points for a knockdown (any part of the body other than the feet touching the floor). These points are awarded by the center referee and are in addition to points for the strike itself.

2 points are awarded by the center referee for successful throws, sweeps or takedowns. Wheel sweeps and scissor kicks are permitted. The center referee will count off 3 seconds once the competitors are engaged in a throw attempt and will separate the competitors if no throw is completed within those 3 seconds. The Divisions are identical to that used for Tae Kwon Do sparring. The Director reserves the right to combine or create new divisions based on the competitors participating to insure fairness.

Winning by Submission – Successful joint locks which result in a tap-out, verbal submission or referee intervention will result in winning the match, regardless of points previously scored. The center referee will only allow 3 seconds for a competitor to successfully complete a submission.

No striking while trapped, clinched or during stand up grappling

No choking techniques of any kind are allowed

No finger locking techniques of any kind will be allowed.

Group Competition, Weapons, Breaking – Hapkido practitioners should enter these competitions along with those open for all martial artists, such as Team Demo, Weapons, Breaking, etc
